《守護者》講述了離異的單身媽媽Gloria Sheppard如何在撫養2個兒子的私人生活與凶殺案警探的工作之間找尋平衡的故事。該劇最先在2008年推出試播集，但沒有被CBS選中。次年7月，Lifetime電視台宣布重新拍攝該劇，並於2010年底開始重新選角和拍攝工作，並最終將該劇列入播出計劃，第一季為13集。
